Questions related
to the basic usage of jv16 PowerTools
Q: What are those little images on the front all
items in the Registry Tool?
A: They indicate whether the item is safe to delete
or not. A green means that the item should be safe to
delete, a red means that removing the item can very dangerous
and a gray question mark means that jv16 PowerTools doesn't
know.
Q: Why some lists has those little boxes where
one must put a tick to and some list don't ?
A: jv16 PowerTools uses this for safety reasons.
Every time you tick an item you know that you are about
to remove that item.
Q: What are those 'Unknown Entries' ?
A: They are items that jv16 PowerTools can't recognize,
this doesn't mean however that they are safe to remove.
Q: Are 'Unknown Entries' or items marked as 'N/A'
always safe to remove?
A: No.
Q: Why I can just remove items and not modify them?
A: Modifying, e.g. renaming, some items might cause
troubles. For example the software which entries you modified
might not work properly anymore.
Q: I could translate jv16 PowerTools to my language,
would you be interested in adding it to the official distribution
package?
A: Yes, of course. Just send me the translation
and that's it.
Questions related
to the Registry Tool
Q: Are items marked with "N/A" always safe
to remove?
A: No.
Q: How can I tell which items to remove?
A: You just have to know which items are safe to
remove.
Questions related
to the Registry Cleaner
Q: What is the Registry Cleaner?
A: Registry Cleaner is a tool that automatically finds
invalid registry entries.
Q: How can I access the Registry Cleaner
A: Go to the Registry Tool, go to the Tools menu and
select 'Registry Cleaner'.
Q: What are threads ?
A: The thread number represents the amount of registry
analyzer units that are currently running. When all of
them are finished, i.e. threads are '0', Registry Cleaner
is finished.
Q: When I use the Registry Cleaner the Threads
value decreases while all the other values increase. Is
this normal?
A: Yes. Threads are the Registry Cleaner components
which check some part of your registry. When the component
has finished its check it will terminate itself and then
the Threads value will decrease.
Q: What are ignored entries?
A: Entries that were ignored based on the IgnoreList.
Q: What is the IgnoreList?
A: IgnoreList contains names of programs and some
general keywords that jv16 PowerTools' Registry Cleaner
should ignore just to be sure. You can edit the ignorelist
if you want to, it's "IgnoreList.dat" under the Settings
directory. You can edit it with e.g. Notepad.
Q: While running the Invalid entries value was something
like 500 and after the Registry Cleaner was finished the
Registry Tool info panel on the left said that there were
only 400 items. Where did 100 items go?
A: Due performance issues the Registry Cleaner
does not do a duplicate check on the items it founds.
I.e. the Registry Cleaner can find the same item many
times but after it's finished the Registry Tool will remove
the duplicate entries from the list and therefore the
amount of items seems to be decreased.
Q: Why the progress bar keeps going on, why it
doesn't show the progress of the Registry Cleaner?
A: In order to do that jv16 PowerTools would have
to know how many registry entries its going to analyze
and it just doesn't know that beforehand.
Questions about
the File Tool
Q: What are the different
file remove methods under the preference menu in the File
Tool?
A: "Normal file removal procedure"
is like the name says the normal way to remove files.
It just creates a backup of the file and after that it
simply removes the file.
"Move to recycle bin" is the method that windows uses.
I.e. The file is moved to the recycle bin from where you
can afterwards restore it. In addition to this jv16 PowerTools
also creates a normal backup of that file.
"Secure wipe procedure" is for your sensitive data.
All files that you normally remove can be restored some
can be restored with just a special program or in a laboratory
but it's possible. This method ensures that nobody can
restore the data.
Q: How does the "Secure wipe
procedure" works?
A: It first writes the file
over with ones and then with zeroes. This is done three
times. After that the file is written over with random
data 10 times. The random data is from a cryptographic
random number generator which is very secure. After this
the procedure also removes the files attributes and Last
Accessed and Last Modified times so nobody can't even
say when the file was totally removed, many other programs
usually leave this information behind. If you have chosen
to create a backup from the file you removed with the
secure wipe procedure jv16 PowerTools also removes the
backup file with secure wipe procedure if you later want
to remove the backup.
Q: I have done a duplicate
search. Can I somehow automatically select the oldest
files so that only one file is left alone and the duplicates
are removed?
A: Yes. After you have used
the duplicate search a "smart selection" feature appears
to the Select menu. With Smart Selection you can select
files based on them last accessed date or the last modified
date.
